Norwegian striker Joshua King is a powerful centre-forward with what Under-18s coach Paul McGuinness describes as “raw potential”.
The Oslo-born teenager suffered a spate of injuries after his arrival which limited his involvement in the 2008/09 campaign, but he impressed the following season with some exciting displays in the U18s and Reserves.
Joshua was handed a Premier League squad number on 21 September 2009. And he got a chance to wear his new no.41 shirt two days later in a promising United debut, as a substitute in the 1-0 League Cup win over Wolverhampton Wanderers at Old Trafford.
The Norwegian finished the 2009/10 campaign in the U18s, and bagged several vital goals as the Reds romped to the Academy League Group C title.
He spent the first half of the 2010/11 season on loan at Championship side Preston North End, before returning to help the Reserves win the Premier League North title and the Manchester Senior Cup, playing in both central and wide forward roles.
Displaying a keen eye for goal inside and outside of the box, King hit eight goals in 16 appearances for the second string. He was also on the bench for the first team's 4-0 victory at Wigan in February and agreed a new two-year contract at the end of the campaign, extending his terms until the summer of 2013.
Still developing physically as well as on the pitch, King has progressed well in both departments. "He’s going to be a very good athlete," says McGuinness. "He's tall, strong and a very powerful player. He’s a strong runner with or without the ball and he can beat defenders."
