Mame Biram Diouf became the first Senegalese player to join United when his transfer was completed on 30 July 2009.

Sir Alex Ferguson said at the time: "We’ve been looking at Diouf for two years. We weren't intending on signing him this summer but the situation accelerated to a point where other clubs started to make bids, so we decided to act now."

Diouf rejoined Molde on loan until the end of the Norwegian season. A highlight of this spell was the 5-2 win over Brann, in which he scored a hat-trick in the first nine minutes and added a fourth goal in the 27th minute. In three seasons in Norway, he netted 33 goals in 75 games.

The striker became eligible to play for United following confirmation of his work permit in December 2009, and he was subsequently given squad number 32. He made his first team debut in the 1-1 draw at Birmingham City on 9 January 2010, coming on a substitute for Paul Scholes.

Diouf is the second forward to move from Molde to Old Trafford - the Reds signed Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, then a virtual unknown, from the same club in the summer of 1996. In December 2009, Sir Alex said, "That’s the kind of situation we’re good at – finding young players who can develop at the club and at 22 years of age Diouf is looking very good.”

The Senegalese youngster spent the entire 2010/11 season on loan at Blackburn Rovers in a bid to further his Premier League education. Mame was usually fielded in a front three - not his preferred line-up - and also had to survive a change of manager mid-season, but ended the campaign with six goals from 30 appearances before returning to Old Trafford.
